GMB membership is divided into three sections:
- The Commercial Services Section combines over 193,132 GMB members working in professional and service industries in the private sector
- The Manufacturing Section combines over 118,382 GMB members working in manufacturing and related industries in the private sector
- The Public Services Section is for members of the Union who are employed in local authorities and private sector contractors engaged in publicly funded work. There are over 322,544 members in the Public Services Section, the vast majority of them working in schools. The Government's proposals for our public services include massive reorganisation and an increased use of the private sector under Best Value, PFI and Public:Private Partnerships.
The three sections are headed by a national secretary with a number of national officers working from London. Within region's each section is headed by a senior organiser who is responsible to the regional secretary and leads a team of GMB officers, membership development officers, organisation officers and support staff.
